Sedan Buying Guide

When car shopping, many people ask, “is this the car for me?”  Well, what does being “right” really mean?  Can I truly afford this car?  Does this car serve all of my utilitarian needs? Is this a car that I like the look of or want to be seen in?

We all think it, even if we don’t say it out loud. In terms of both your time and money, a car is a huge investment - it needs to be something that works for you, financially, practically, but also aesthetically. You’ll have to look at your own car every time you walk up to it, don’t you want to like what you see?  And when you arrive somewhere, the first impression of you is arriving in your car.  That’s important!

Let’s take a look at the variety of Ford sedans and what each style has to offer.

For the sake of simplicity, let’s accept a sedan as the following:  A vehicle with three main compartments:

  • engine
  • passenger
  • luggage

whereas hatchbacks generally feature folding seats to increase luggage space. Many sedans can also come as a coupe or a hatchback, meaning it either has two or five doors (the trunk of a hatchback is qualified as a door), but a typical sedan will have four.

We’ll break that down even further into class:

  1. Small,
  2. Medium
  3. Large.

Small sedans can also be classified as compact and even subcompact cars. Subcompact and compact cars are most often seen in the city, bobbing and weaving downtown streets while fitting into the tightest parking spaces.  This agility, combined with the best fuel economy of non-electric or hybrid cars, makes them an attractive option to young professionals, or even as a 2nd car for families as a commuter car.  Small sedans are known for their very attainable price tags, with models like the Mazda 3 start around $18,000.

Mid-size Sedans used to be America’s Family car before the fascination with the gas guzzling SUVs began. Up until that point, most families had a mid-size sedan in their driveway.  The mid-size class sedan steps above the commuter car level and offers a more spacious cabin, higher-level amenities, more sophisticated available options and suitable cargo space. The 2019 Mazda 6 is Mazda’s leading mid-size sedan, each year bringing new features and upgrades.

And finally, Large, or full-size sedans offer the most cabin space, cargo and sometimes power that you can find in a sedan.  Make no mistake, this isn’t the boat that your grandfather used to drive around, modern full-size sedans have been updated with more luxury and available features.

While most consumers talk about sedans as if they are one class, there are many different variations of car in each of these classes.  No matter what it is, or what you’re looking for, no matter your lifestyle or where you live, if you’re looking for a sedan, there’s something out there that fits you.
